Milestone Birthday & Milestone Wedding Anniversary
This cocktail has a very special place in my heart because it was one of the signature drinks on the day my husband and I celebrated both a milestone birthday and a milestone wedding anniversary. Bear with me as I tell you a little bit of the back story. When my husband and I got engaged and started planning our wedding we were young and both college students. We were both so excited and in love and were ready to start our lives together. The timing of our upcoming wedding and our student status caused us to have to be quite creative on a small budget.
We were lucky to have immensely talented friends that helped and volunteered their services and the fact that the wedding was around Christmas lend itself to having an already beautifully decorated church. The wedding turned out to be a memorable event, but I always vowed, now that I’m wiser to all I had to forgo, that I would have a redo. We picked Hotel Zaza in Houston as our venue and this swanky hotel was a great backdrop to what we called our marriage blessing ceremony. The ceremony was followed by a big dance party to celebrate our milestone birthdays. This celebration, came with all the things a wedding comes with, a lot of fun memories and a bit of family drama.LOL!

This is the part of my story were the Very Berry cocktail comes in. I was surprised at the nervousness I felt before the celebration, almost as if I was having pre-wedding jitters again. As we went through our preparations and photoshoot before the event, sensing my nervousness, this cocktail was put in my hand by one of the Hotel’s attentive staff. I would enjoy a couple of sips of the drink and would misplace it as I moved from one activity to another. Like magic, I would ask, and the drink was replenished again. I am so glad I was able to enjoy this wonderful cocktail at my celebration. Of course, I had to ask Hotel Zaza what was in this cocktail and the recipe below is my take on it.
Ivory and Noire’s Tip for a Fun Presentation:
- Prepare several champagne glasses in advance by adding the sugar rim, the rum, and the berries.
1a. Make the sugar rim more fun by offering glasses rimmed with different types of flavored sugars besides the turbinado sugar listed on the recipe. An example of other sugars that can be used is a cranberry sugar rimmer and a cosmopolitan sugar rimmer. Visually it makes your presentation even more appealing and lets your guest personalize their cocktail. When I’ve done this, it has always been a hit.
- Place these glasses on a tray and have the Prosecco on ice right next to it. This makes a wonderful presentation.
- When your guests arrive, they can serve themselves by adding the Prosecco to their glass when they are ready for their cocktail.
The recipe for the Very Berry Cocktail is in the recipe card below. Cheers!
